The standard device that would come to mind is Intersense. or even the VCam.
However.... could the Iphone be such a device? That is the Question! :-)

(maybe the compass gets interference etc...these are things of concern)

That was very informative.

"The Virtual Camera can be a plugin that slaves a CG Cryengine camera
(there can be more than one CG camera in the Sandbox) to a physical
device such as an LCD screen, with an accelerometer, compass and
gyroscope."

That part is the one that got me interested the most. That "physical device". Do you know where I can find any info about that? doesn't sound too complicated, but I can't find any info on the subject, don't even know how to name the thing.

When I went on to one of the cinematography "lists" and opened up a discussion on Virtual Cinematography, they balked at the idea that it could be done in real-time (in the year 2010) on a desktop.

Now watch this video from Newtek and LightWave 10: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhJauu_vB2A

Hi, Clyde.

Good post with good info on virtual cinematography. I believe the GCS3 virtual cinematography system will be of interest to you and your readers. The GCs3 is commercially available, is compatible with numerous video game engines and 3D animation programs, and is being utilized right now by film, television and video game studios. Will you kindly consider adding this link to more info on the GCS3 for your readers enjoy, as perhaps "Update #5" above: http://www.gamecaster.com/news/GCS3-Revolutiona...

Your consideration is much appreciated.

- Dave

Since the topic is hot and has generated much interested in Cinematography lists in Yahoo, Cinematography.net and LinkediN, I just have to share some more info with you, bordering a bit on the geeky side, but the real deal in brief is at 5:40 minutes into the video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlZ_IoY4XTg&feat...

Cost?? US$ 10,000! even if you increase it 400 percent, you see what can be bought for the money.
This is stuff that "suppliers" and the "brains" hired by Hollywood won't make known in public, because everyone knows the vast reserves of budgets available to high profile studios and feature films.

And for the unbelievers, in this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMygkWmsf2g&feat...
...is where you can see, a realtime Pandora type world that can be imported from typical software packages such as Maya etc, and then EACH and every pebble, rock, tree can be shifted about in realtime, WHILE they are animated.

This is what you would then use, to do Scene blocking, Moco premapped to characters (or live mocap stream with the help of Off-the-shelf programmers who can program in CUDA, Nvidia's version of the common C++ language).

(Tesla GPUs may have been already used in Avatar, though I would think that the technology was older as the film was conceived a while ago)
Hope this inspires indie production houses and even big budget hollywood studios to re-look at what the Visualization community can offer Cinematography.

kind Regards.
