Stereoscopic 3D Training Workshops:

Many 3D workshops, concentrate on a single aspect of stereoscopic 3D … mainly, shooting in 3D and choice of camera Rig or commercial equipment. This is because most instructors are fresh graduates to Stereoscopy themselves, delving into 3D  due to demands of Hollywood today.

Real Vision Stereo 3D workshops encourage participants to “THINK” in 3D and are equipment and hardware / software agnostic . The consequences of not thinking, scripting, storyboarding and doing camera blocking or graphic design in 3D, is evident in some of today’s 3D movies.

Too many of the existing courses are more “upgrades” for technicians and cinematographers on how to use the latest Gear, and there is less focus on the visual grammar of storytelling in stereoscopic 3D.

The “Think in 3D” workshops are spread over 2 or 3 days and comprise the basics of stereoscopic 3D, and then go into much detail with hands-on practicals that allow for setting up a 3D Camera Rig, video demonstrations, interspersed with lectures and sessions on Questions and Answers. Question & Answer sessions at many times fail to elicit audience participation – These sessions are done differently.

The lecturer will initiate common Questions drawn from years of experience in Stereoscopic 3D. There are always questions on participants minds, but never asked. At the end of the Workshop – we aim to have a workforce of Media professionals, Directors, DPs, Editors and DI artists that will carry their knowledge of stereoscopic 3D back to their organizations and propagate the knowledge to their peers to create content in Stereo 3D.

    How can you really teach the principles of 3D filmmaking when all you’re using is a side-by-side rig ? Any 3D shot where the focal distance is under about 12-10 ft, needs to be captured using a beam-splitter. It’s given… Just wondering.

    Good question. That’s why the workshops are called ‘think in 3d’.
    It’s like saying how can you teach the principles of driving, on an automatic car, without instructing with a manual gearbox.

    However don’t get me wrong, when there is a Beamsplitter rig, available it is demonstrated, but after participants learn framing and thinking in 3d (without a Beamsplitter) when introduced to a Beamsplitter all they miss is the user manual for setup. The caveats of polarization, wave retarders, camera placement for non jello cam artefacts in stereo and more (that are taught during the workshops) all come back to them.

    Beamsplitters are needed for closeups, but there’s ways to frame in 3D that ignite creative thinking in participants when all they have is a parallel rig. THIS is one of the purposes of the Think in 3D workshops. What creative framing am i talking about? Go through the knowledgebase articles… its all there.

    That’s why I encourage Camera operators and DPs to take any number of workshops that already exist that specifically teach how to shoot with a beamsplitter.

    There is a no one-shop-fits-all course. The Think in 3D course is to expand participants (and we dont limit our thinking to cater to DPs and Camera technicians only. AD agencies, Animators, and TV producers, R&D engineers attend) horizons on all aspects of Stereo 3D productiont, and rather than repeat myself here in comments, I’d encourage you to read the free knowledgebase (Hollywood does!).
