Cinematic VR and Instant Returns on Investment, Part II

(Note: Videos are mildly NSFW. Those without VR headsets can choose the anaglyph option and use red-cyan glasses)

“The proof is in the pudding,” to quote a more palatable one, than the overused; “Content is King”.

After an earlier article I’d written: “Insta-ROI and Cinematic VR,” I got a few emails from producers asking to explain more. One of them has accepted there’s no free lunch, and so I’ve scored a consultation gig.

However, it’s nice to have free pudding, so have a look at the video above – A test scene from the planned “Dirrogate:DeepVR” film and then, see a re-framed [...]

360 Video is not ‘Cinematic VR’…and Here’s why.

What’s the difference between 360 video and video based VR? Have a look at the video above – and if possible, in a VR headset.

If you’re viewing it on a PC monitor or Ipad or phone screen, the points being made won’t apply… Why?

When viewing this video on a cell/laptop/ipad screen, our senses adapt – from years of watching flat video. We start taking ‘depth cues’ from motion, parallax and our known knowledge of the real world to quickly come to a conclusion about such things as:

The Dilemma of Positional tracking in Cinematic VR films.

STORYTELLING IN VR:

The scene above is from the upcoming VR film “Dirrogate:DeepVR”. A pseudo-script excerpt might read somewhat like this:

Ext. Dan’s Apt, Terrace, Night.

(ambiance: city sounds, a police siren wails in the distance)

We look at Maya through Dan’s perspective, sitting on one of the sun loungers on the terrace.

Root VR, Deep VR and your career in Virtual Reality filmmaking

Shooting in VR on Digital Sets:

For the past 4 days we’ve been shooting the opening scene of ‘Dirrogate:DeepVR’ at Hazelwood Terrace. The reason the scene’s taking so long is not because Maya is a bad actor, no, in fact she’s been really co-operative, going through multiple wardrobe changes, hair styles and contact lenses without fuss. Learning the ropes of filming on Digital sets in Virtual Reality, and discovering a new language of storytelling along the way, is the reason.

We’ll get to some of the grammar and vocabulary soon; Deep VR and Root VR is the title of this article, after all. Let’s talk a bit more about [...]
