Fishy 3D – Should a Stereographer swim against the 3D tide?

Handling a 2D mindset on a 3D production:

Today… I put my money where my mouth is…I walked out of a film set (the first time ever). Admittedly I was consulting at lower than my usual rate, so that helped me make up my mind. I’ve previously come down heavy on Stereographers for bending backward and compromising their craft;¬†My Spiderman review comes to mind.

So what should a stereographer do when faced with the nouveau 3D crowd? A Director or Cinematographer, or end client that does not like being told they aren’t thinking in 3D? The answer is not as simple as mine was, and I’ll be the first to recognize that every job exists to put [...]

Exploring the Science, Art, Evolution and Use of Stereoscopic 3D: A must read book.

So you think you know all there is to know about stereoscopic 3D film-making because you attended that two day workshop? That’s what runs through my mind when I meet a few of today’s stereographers and Cinematographers who hand me a business card from a freshly printed stack.

Now, it does not help in furthering the art of 3D if I’m going to be condescending. The illiterate 3D Auteur Theory

The statement above is true, as long as the Auteur is of the caliber of Hitchcock, the Old Masters, and of course a few 3D Auteurs who have earned this title; Cameron, Ridley Scott and Martin Scorsese.

What Stanley Kubrick did not take into account was of course the schooling that is needed to be 3D literate before graduating to “Auteur” status in stereoscopic film making.

What is Auteur Theory?

Stereomatography: A review of Spider-man 3D

Stereomatography: What is it?

It could be defined as the art of recording the spatial depth of a scene in motion pictures. Why is it relevant to the latest 3D movie now out in Cinemas; The Amazing Spider-man?

We all know what Cinematography is. In a nutshell, it is the art (and science) of shooting and producing moving pictures. The Cinematographer or Director of Photography is in-charge of this department of a film being shot.¬†Everything has been going smooth thus far, and then Stereoscopic 3D re-surfaces in all it’s Digital glory this decade, and suddenly roles of crew and definitions of techniques in film get changed.
